Hello Nathaniel,
Keep an eye out for operative roles on the website with S&T in your area.
In the meantime if your company has a S&T department ask if you can join them to gain some experience. If not try to understand the basics of the role this will help you in further interviews with network rail. There are a number of learning materials online.
