Hi,
While I am not an expert in this area I do believe it would be possible to blend both your degree and your thoughts of a apprenticeship. You may even want to consider the graduate scheme that Network Rail offers. Allow you to get the most from you degree but all advance in the working enviorment.
Again I am not an expert but hope this help a little.
